The S-3 Viking has all four crew members seated on ejection seats. The pilot's controls include a control stick in place of the traditional wheel. The slightly swept wing and General Electric TF-34 fan engines provide the S-3A with long-range or on-station endurance at cruise speeds and altitudes typical of subsonic jet aircraft.

The S-3A carried a surprisingly diverse array of ordnance for such a specialized platform on its two underwing hardpoints and bomb bays. In addition to the Mk. 46 air-dropped torpedo, depth charges, and mines for ASW, the Viking also carried Mk. 80-series General Purpose Bombs, cluster munitions, unguided rockets, and even nuclear bombs.

The Lockheed S-3 Viking is a four-seat twin-engine jet aircraft that was used by the U.S. Navy to identify and track enemy submarines. In the late 1990s, the S-3B's mission focus shifted to surface warfare and aerial refueling. The Viking also provided electronic warfare and surface surveillance capabilities to the carrier battle group. A carrier-based, subsonic, all-weather, multi-mission.

With a pilot and three sensor operators, it was known to fleet crews as the "Hoover," owing to the vacuum sound of its engines, and operated day and night from big-deck.

The S-3 Viking was the first sub-hunting carrier jet. Due to its small size, the Viking featured space-saving multi-tasking readout displays, allowing the crew to interpret data from several sensors simultaneously. The S-3's wing and turbofan engine combination improved cruise control, an important feature when prowling for submarines.

The S-3 was built to provide anti-submarine protection for US aircraft carrier battle groups. Despite its relatively large wingspan, the Viking is an incredibly compact aircraft housing four crewman, state-of-the-art data-processing computers, a magnetic-anomaly detector, a high-resolution search radar, a FLIR system, and 60 sonobuoys.

One such aircraft was the Lockheed S-3B 'Viking.' When did NASA acquire the Viking? Lockheed primarily developed its S-3 'Viking' jet for use by the US navy in the domain of anti-submarine warfare. The type first flew in January 1972, and entered active service two years later. By the 1990s, its operational focus had switched to aerial.
